10 imagesThe small island of St. John has plenty of sunshine but few outlets for agriculture. As the least populated of the U.S. Virgin Islands, an island wide beekeeping initiative has struck residents as an answer to the lack of locally produced goods. Beekeeping and bee farming are agricultural activities that have low impact on the land, and do not require much space to become profitable small businesses. This is perfect for the island of St. John, as three quarters of the island's nine mile long landmass are occupied by the Virgin Islands national Park. The bees will not only help to support the farmers, but also support the ecosystem of the Virgin Islands National Park.
